Sri Lanka is a solid honeymoon pick if you skip the backpacker route and lean into the right hotels and pacing. Here's the route that actually works for couples.
A good Sri Lanka honeymoon is about doing less, not more. Three or four bases, each for 2–3 nights. Start at a boutique property in Kandy or the surrounding hills — there are small hotels tucked into tea plantations that feel like treehouses for adults. The Helga's Folly in Kandy is famously eccentric and romantic. Then move to the Cultural Triangle: a hotel near Sigiriya with a view of the rock (Aliya Resort, Jetwing Vil Uyana). One day for Sigiriya and Pidurangala, one day for a hot air balloon ride over the Dambulla plains if budget allows.
The hill country leg is where the romance peaks. Wildflower Cottage or the Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya have old-world colonial charm. The train ride from Kandy to Nanu Oya is a shared experience that actually lives up to the photos. After the hills, go straight to the coast — but skip the backpacker spots. Book a hotel in Galle Fort itself (it's expensive but walking the ramparts at sunset is worth the splurge) or a secluded beach resort in Tangalle or Dickwella. The Kahanda Kanda near Galle and the Cape Weligama are luxury options that feel private and curated.
What you can skip: Colombo entirely (save it for the last night if you need a city fix). Yala is fine but the jeep convoys aren't romantic. Ella is packed with backpackers and can feel more like a hostel scene than a honeymoon. Pick your quiet corners and invest in accommodations with private pools and good in-house restaurants. The best honeymoon meal I know is a private rice-and-curry dinner on a verandah overlooking a tea plantation, no one else around, crickets loud enough to cover the conversation.
